The regional origin of non-standard
speakers of Dutch can in large part be identified on
the basis of the fundamental frequency of their speech (Gooskens 1997). While
the intonation patterns of non-standard Dutch must therefore generally be
different from those of the standard language, we do not know what these
differences are. The project Intonation
in varieties of Dutch aims at answering this question based on three
dialects of Dutch (Zeelandic,
Frisian and Low Saxon) as well as
two urban dialects (spoken in
The intonational patterns of these varieties are systematically analyzed and compared with each other as well as with Standard Dutch. The study of native dialects is enriched by the analysis of the pronunciation of learners of Dutch with a Chinese language background.
