Intonation in varieties of Dutch

The regional origin of non-standard speakers of Dutch can in large part be identified on the basis of the fundamental frequency of their speech (Gooskens 1997). While the intonation patterns of non-standard Dutch must therefore generally be different from those of the standard language, we do not know what these differences are. The project Intonation in varieties of Dutch aims at answering this question based on three dialects of Dutch (Zeelandic, Frisian and Low Saxon) as well as two urban dialects (spoken in Amsterdam and Rotterdam). See map

The intonational patterns of these varieties are systematically analyzed and compared with each other as well as with Standard Dutch. The study of native dialects is enriched by the analysis of the pronunciation of  learners of Dutch with a Chinese language background.
